5 truths of mobile app monitoring

Mobile monitoring is a different world. Key factors can help put you on top of that world.

Today, you have no choice but to be in the business of mobile applications. That means you also have no choice but to prioritize your ability to monitor and optimize them. Everything depends on it: reputation, growth, sales, even employee productivity.

You’ve been monitoring your organization’s wired apps since applications existed. But mobile monitoring is a different matter entirely. It comes with new complications, new use cases, and new consequences for screw-ups. Now that it’s time to get serious about mobile monitoring, here are five truths to bear in mind.

Different types of apps require different types of monitoring

A significant factor in the complexity of monitoring mobile applications is the fact that there are two basic kinds, often consumed simultaneously. Native apps live on devices, are specific to a certain OS, and communicate over HTTP(s). Browser-based apps use browsers to access applications online. Many companies offer both to their customers. So IT organizations need to be sure that they have appropriate solutions to monitor all types of mobile applications, native or browser-based.

Users want features, and that drives complexity

Users are extremely feature-conscious. Device manufacturers play to this demand and compete with one another to launch better and better devices. That means that your IT organization must be prepared to monitor a given app on multiple devices—Android, iPhone, and anything else that has decent market share. And it means that the user experience of the app’s performance and availability will have to stay the same from device to device and version to version.

Quality of service and user experience are critical

What happens if one of your customers tries to access your app on a smartphone and it takes more than five seconds to load? Or if the page doesn’t render similarly on a laptop? Or service is intermittent when the customer travels? Studies show that customers are quick to take their business elsewhere in response to inconvenience. That means you need a solution that goes beyond the capabilities of specialized mobile-device management software to monitor all aspects of your mobile application delivery chain—from the user device to the cloud to your data center—across a wide range of platforms and devices.

Visibility across delivery chain is important—and hard to obtain

The more complex the infrastructure, the more visibility you need to keep performance at peak levels. And the mobile delivery chain is very complex. You have to discover and map every component in the chain as well as business-service dependencies. You’ll also need deep diagnostic capabilities and real-user information, so you can resolve issues before customers are inconvenienced, as well as proactive notification of mobile events and diagnostics for backend systems.

Monitoring solution features will drive cost

Mobile monitoring can be costly and time consuming. But a monitoring solution with the right features can help you monitor effectively without spending too much of your budget or tying up too many staff hours. A few cost-saving tips include:

  • Use a solution that can monitor both mobile and traditional apps and access points.
  • Look for the ability to bridge the gap between development and ops by establishing a shared center of excellence. That way, you can reuse testing scripts, knowledge, and expertise.
  • Consider a SaaS monitoring solution to meet all of your monitoring needs or cover any gaps that you can’t cover in-house.
