How to meet 24x7 demands and still contain IT costs

How to meet 24x7 demands and still contain IT costs

The cost benefit trade-off for IT managers and CIOs in midsize companies hinges on the availability requirements of their core businesses. It might be online banking availability requirements, lighting manufacturer availability requirements or the requirements of a midsize law firm. CIOs weigh the impact and cost of downtime to their businesses differently. As midsize public sector energy firms can attest, “availability” is the number one criteria full stop. But in today’s mobile world it’s no longer a clear trade-off for every business. The expectation from customers and suppliers is that the business could and should be accessible anytime, anywhere, from any device. In fact it becomes a competitive advantage for businesses that provide 7 by 24 access.

We need to reconsider the idea that not all businesses have the same level of financial risk if they become unavailable. Mobile devices have ratcheted up the speed, attention and expectation of business responsiveness in a way that impacts customers’ experience and loyalty. If customers cannot reach your business or get information about your business from their mobile devices at any time, they will move to the next “search” and fill their online cart, or fill out their insurance forms or pay their utility bills or purchase flowers for their loved ones. No midsize business can afford downtime.

Downtime costs are one concern and not a small one. But, then again, it depends on your specific availability requirements. Legacy and aging infrastructure not only causes downtime but also drives up costs as processes cannot keep up with new IT depends.

Cloud services are attractive and can be purchased out of operating expense budgets. But a cloud solution needs to be weighed against data privacy and country regulations on where data can be stored. Attractive leasing options for on-premise solutions also make it compelling to purchase gear through low monthly payments.

In reality most midsize businesses consider both options—cloud services and on-premise solutions. Typically they end up with a hybrid environment that is still expected to keep up with the critical 7 by 24 demands of a mobile workforce and a mobile client base.
